Database branching transforms how teams work. When a developer is building a new feature that requires schema changes, they branch the database, run migrations on the branch, develop against it, and merge — without touching production data.
For small Nigerian engineering teams (often 1–3 developers), this removes a significant source of production incidents from exploratory development.
PostgreSQL Is the Right Foundation
PostgreSQL's feature set — JSONB for flexible document storage, full-text search, window functions, robust indexing, strong ACID compliance — handles the data requirements of most SaaS products without reaching for additional databases.
Nigerian fintech and operations software often requires complex queries and transactional integrity. PostgreSQL handles both well. MySQL and SQLite do not handle certain edge cases with the same reliability.
Integration With the Modern Stack
Neon integrates directly with the infrastructure stack we use: Vercel for deployment, Drizzle ORM for type-safe queries in TypeScript, and standard PostgreSQL clients for any backend framework.
The ORM-to-database connection works in both serverless (Vercel Edge Functions, Cloudflare Workers) and traditional server environments — meaning architecture decisions don't create database lock-in.
